Periodontal Care
Healthy Gums. Strong Foundation. Lifelong Smiles.
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. When plaque and bacteria accumulate below the gumline, they can trigger inflammation and infection that may lead to bleeding gums, bone loss, gum recession, and, if left untreated, tooth loss.
At BC Dental Design, we provide comprehensive, evidence-based periodontal care designed to treat active gum disease, preserve the supporting structures of your teeth, and help you maintain a healthy smile for years to come.
Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Scaling and root planing, often referred to as a deep cleaning, is a non-surgical treatment used to manage periodontal (gum) disease.
During your treatment, our hygienists carefully remove plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria from beneath the gumline and along the root surfaces of your teeth. This helps reduce inflammation, minimize bacterial buildup, and create an environment where your gums can begin to heal.
Before treatment, Dr. Colaruotolo and our hygiene team will perform a comprehensive periodontal evaluation, which may include:
- Digital radiographs
- Periodontal charting and pocket measurements
- Assessment of gum recession and bone support
- Evaluation of bleeding and inflammation
For your comfort, treatment is often completed over multiple visits, and local anesthesia may be used as needed.

Periodontal Maintenance
Once periodontal disease has been treated, ongoing maintenance is essential to keeping your gums healthy and preventing disease from returning.
Unlike routine dental cleanings, periodontal maintenance appointments are specifically designed for patients with a history of gum disease. During these visits, we carefully remove bacterial deposits from above and below the gumline, monitor periodontal pockets, evaluate gum health, and identify changes before they become more serious.
Most patients benefit from periodontal maintenance every three to four months, although your recommended schedule will be personalized based on your individual needs.
Why Periodontal Care Matters
